Exam scam: Apex court to check answer sheets

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed for production of some of the answer sheets of the Chhattisgarh civil judge examinations 2008, hearing a PIL alleging selection of relatives and associates of sitting judges, politicians and bureaucrats in lower judicial service.
A bench of Justices R M Lodha and A R Dave expressed their intent to go through some of the original answer sheets in view of the allegations that there was a large-scale manipulation in the award of marks as revealed through the information obtained under the Right to Information Act.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) submitted that the PIL raised serious question mark on integrity and independence of the judicial system as two immediate relatives of law secretary of Chhattisgarh were declared successful and marks were awarded to them in numerals and not in words.

A counsel, representing the Chhattisgarh High Court registry, on his part, submitted that a similar petition was pending before the High Court over there and entertaining the PIL concerning a service matter would amount to having parallel proceedings.

Following the brief hearing, the court also directed that an official, who was conversant with the examination system, to be present on the next date of hearing. “You bring on record some of the original answer sheets including relating to those two candidates. The original will clarify a lot of things,” the Bench said.

The PIL sought directions for fresh examination and an independent inquiry into the allegations of large-scale corruption and irregularities such as manipulation in evaluation of answer sheets of the candidates.
