In Dakshina Kannada district, the RTI Act has been implemented in every government office and SPIOs designated to furnish information sought. According to Superintendent Anand Nayak of DC’s office, 251 applications have been received so far, of which 245 have been disposed off. Six applications are pending and notices have been issued to the applicants to avail the information sought. No application has been rejected so far. “However, sometimes we may not have the information relating to some records of 40 to 50 years back. So we send an endorsement that we do not have the record.” Most of the applications related to public works, old records, court judgement copies, etc. Very few applicants use it for personal grievances.

“There are several instances where we have given the information within five days in an emergency,” notes the officer.

The District SP’s office, which keeps tabs on the number of applications received and disposed of by various police stations on monthly basis, received 138 applications and disposed of 137. Only one application submitted on August 6 is pending. Similar is the case with Mangalore City Corporation, ZP, TP, PWD and RTO, among other offices.
