MLAs healthy on public funds

BANGALORE: Unmindful of the poverty and poor health of people in their constituencies, MLAs in Karnataka have claimed medical allowances from the government totalling to Rs 82.88 lakh in the last two years. All this money is what tax-payers have paid to the government.

According to the documents procured by The Times of India under the RTI Act, even some ministers, whose personal incomes run into lakhs of rupees per month, don't mind dipping into the public coffers. The Karnataka Legislature (Members Medical Attendance) (Amended) Rules-1997 gives them the provision for medical allowances, but MLAs could let go of the option, leaving the public money to be used for better purposes, rue some officials.
