Jalandhar, Sept 17 : For the convenience of the public, every Suvidha Centre in the state has been equipped to provide information under RTI Act. This was stated by Punjab Chief Information Commissioner Rajan Kashyap, while talking to news persons here today after reviewing the meeting of the Public Information Officers. Terming the RTI Act as a window for a common man to understand the working of the government, Mr Kashyap said under this act accurate and timely information would be provided to anyone who seeks information regarding the functioning or records of the government. For delaying and providing incomplete information, provision was there to impose about on the concerned officer, he said adding that so far nearly 40 officers have been penalised for their act of ommissions. India is the 55th country in the world to implement RTI Act and first to impose penalties for delaying and providing incomplete information, he informed. For speedy trials of cases, the number of benches have been increased from five to nine, which would start functioning from October one this year, he said adding that out of the total 3000 pending cases, 1900 had already been disposed of. Mr Kashyap said the effective implementation of RTI Act in Punjab was a role model for other states. ''The commissoners make it a point to visit every district twice a month, so as to sort out problems faced by the officers immidiately,'' he said. Annual report regarding the efficiencies and deficiences in implemention of the Act would be prepared, which he said, would be submitted to the Vidhan Sabha for steps to be taken to further improve the efficiency of the Act.
