The Right to Information Study Centre has alleged that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had violated the norms in purchasing computers during 2005. The Managing Trustee of Study Centre S. Amaresh and trustee B.H. Veeresh told presspersons here on Thursday that during 2005 the BBMP had purchased computers worth Rs. 3.39 crores without bringing it to the notice of BBMP Expert Committee. There were no entries made in stock register as per norms about the computer purchase, they alleged. The officials had also misused the World Bank fund reserved for developmental works, they said. Huge amount had been billed to BBMP on software purchase, they alleged. The Chief Auditor of BBMP had, in his report in 2006, brought to the malpractices to the notice of then BBMP Commissioner and recommended action against officials concerned. But no action had been taken by the then BBMP Commissioner, they said. Now BBMP is attempting to "cover up" the malpractices by taking steps which had to be followed prior to purchase, they said. The study centre, they said, had recently filed a complaint with the Lokayukta on this deal and urged Governor Ramnath Thakur to order a probe.
