No one has right to seek info on Vedanti's travels: Makkar

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar today said that Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) activist Baldev Singh Sirsa had no right to demand details of foreign tours of Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti under Right to Information Act (RTI).

Talking to mediapersons at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib after honouring seven members of the committee, who will visit SGPC-run BBSBEC, Fatehgarh Sahib for NBA accreditation, Mr Makkar said it was not right for Mr Sirsa to seek details of foreign visit of leaders like Akal Takht Jathedar.

He said Akal Takht is the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, so no one should dare to ask unnecessary questions. When asked whether the information would be provided to Mr Sirsa under RTI, Mr Makkar however, evaded the reply.

Regarding the charges of mortal turpitude against Assistant secretary of the SGPC and in charge (publicity) Daljit Singh Bedi, Mr Makkar said he would constitute a high-level committee, which would probe the charges.
He said elaborate arrangements had been made for the SGPC general house election to be held on November 23. The SGPC was seriously pursuing the resolution of making NRI Sikhs as its members.

He said that despite the imposition of emergency in Pakistan, a Sikh Jatha was sent to Pakistan to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev as the Pak government had assured safety of Jatha members.

On releasing book of Sikh scholar Rattan Singh Jaggi, Makkar admitted that he recently released the book without reading contents of the book. He said some persons unnecessary tried to create controversy.
He said Jaggi was a renowned author and SGPC had assigned him the task to verify the contents of the books to be translated in English by SGPC.
