Dinner gone wrong

Dinner gone wrong

The government does not know how to handle a query that has been raised on a dinner hosted by minister of state for external affairs Anand Sharma on January 30. Since January 30 is Mahatma Gandhi’s martyrdom day, no government event is hosted on that day. Even Republic Day celebrations conclude on January 29 because of this. But Anand Sharma, being the convener

of the organising committee of the Satyagraha centenary celebrations, organised a dinner for the delegates who had converged at the capital from the world over. Now a simple query under the RTI Act has put the government in a tizzy. It is now looking for a precedent.

Re: Dinner gone wrong

This exactly is the greatest hurdle in implementing RTI Act. Due to oversight or out of compulsion of diplomaacy, a dinner has been hosted on30th January. It is a fact and truth. Why should the PIO try to suppress the information ? This exactly is what is happening in all types of information. When someone ask a simple information the bureaucracy start connecting that information with all other pending cases or decisions on the subject. They want to reply in such a way that it does not contradict what ever information already furnished. iIn short, no public authority want to answer an inconvenient question. This mind-set has to go. In this case the government should furnish the information that " Yes, a dinner was hosted on 30th January. So what ? Don't we eat food on that day ?

A typical case of much ado about nothing, be it information seekers or confused authorities reluctant to provide information .Imagine, moral courage and decision taking capabilities of people, who are literary scared to provide even this low level information.

Some websites replace the article with the "live link" with the news in the next days edition.

Just visit the Asian Age website and search in the archives for that article.

Maybe liquor & Non-Veg food was served in that dinner.

Re: Dinner gone wrong

60 years are too long a period. I think it is high time for us to stop the hypocrisy and behave normally. To-day consuming alchohol and eating non-veg food is not an offence in India. Why should we behave apologetically just because Mahathma Ghandi did not like it 100 years back ?

During dinner hosted for very High Foreign Head of States, do you mean to say that we tell them to change their eating habits while in India ? Impossible. In fact the host country has to go to the extreme to make at least the food and drinks served to them is to their taste. Whether one like it or not, we have no choice other than serving a visitting foreign dignitory at least the normal food and drinks he consumes in his country. Everyone at the upper achelon knows it. Why should the petty bureaucrates try to hide this ? They should not be scared to disclose the correct information.

Re: Dinner gone wrong

SO WHAT , if liquor and non-veg was served. If you invite people ,civility and (may be diplomacy) demands you cater for individual tastes (within parameters of both sides sensitivities). I fully agree with Col.,high time we as public stop behaving as hypocrites and third world citizens .
How many of us knew that on 30th jan we aren't supposd to have official dinner party ,and liquor and non-veg are taboos on that evening.I think we are still stuck thick in third world conduct and hypocritical notions.
