| New Delhi: Gujarat BJP legislator Atul Patel was fined an amount of Rs 25,000 for refusing to give information under Right to Information Act. He is working as the chairman of a public trust. Gujarat's Chief Information Commissioner R N Das imposed the fine on Patel on Saturday. Atul Patel is the chairman and appellate authority of Vadu Juth Kelvani Mandal in Mahasana district. Dayabhai Patel, who is the complainant, had accused the MLA of not providing information about use of funds despite the organisation headed by him being a public trust. Patel, talking to PTI, said that the complainant was harassing the trust by asking for "trival" information under Act. The Mandal was given grants from the funds of Members Of Parliament A K Patel and Gopalsinh Solanki for purchasing computers and building a community hall for a computer institute at Kadi town. Through the RTI application, Dayabhai Patel had asked for the details of the amount spent by the Mandal. After not getting any response, he approached the Gujarat Information Commission. The Chief Information Commissioner, in his order, said the Mandal is a public trust should have provided the information to Dayabhai. The Commission has asked the District Planning Officer to provide necessary information to the complainant within 15 days. MLA fined Rs 25K under RTI Act : gujarat, bjp, mla, rti act, fine : IBNLive.com : CNN-IBN

Public is the owner of information. It has every right to ask for information. It is not for a public servent to decide what information is 'trival'. If a public servent feels harassed because the master (Public) asks for information, he/ she can cease to be a public servant. |
