‘Review suggested amendments to RTI Act’

Chandigarh, January 4 Members of the National Coordination Committee on the Right to Information (RTI) Act held their first meeting here today.

The committee, appointed by the Central Information Commission, has been mandated the task of reviewing the suggested amendments to the RTI Act as well as coordinating suggestions made by various state information commission on how to make the Act more effective.

The members of the committee are Punjab State Chief Information Commissioner (SCIC) Rajan Kashyap, Haryana SCIC G Madhvan, Karnataka SCIC KK Misra, Maharashtra SCIC Suresh V Joshi, Nagaland SCIC P Talitemjen Ao, Uttarakhand SCIC RS Tolia, Chhattisgarh SCIC AK Vijayavargiya, Bihar SCIC SS Singh and Central Information Commissioner MM Ansari.

Addressing mediapersons here, the committee members said major roadblocks in the way of effective implementation of the RTI Act were lack of adequate awareness among the common people as well as the officials, the mindset of the public authorities that has always forbade them from telling about their working and lack of transparency in the government functioning.

The committee would submit its report within six months.
The members said despite initial hiccups, the RTI Act was playing an important part in making the common man aware of his rights.
