I received my Income Tax refund within a month

My name is Aparna Karmarkar. I live in Pune and practice as an architect. I had filed my Income Tax Reaturn for the Finincial year 2007-08 on July31st ,2008. I had claimed a refund of Rupees Four Thousand and Thirty Six rupees.

I waited patiently for the refund till June,2009. No action from Income Tax Office. When I told this story to Mr.Atul Patankar, he was very kind to introduce me to the idea of RTI !!

He made the application ready, we filled in the necessary details and filed the application on June 10th, 2009. I was surprised when the sleepy department started calling me. The concerned officer told me that he has posted the cheque and could I please widraw the application? Again Mr.Patankar advised me not to do so , till I had a cheque in my hands.

Thanks to RTI and Mr.Atul Patankar, I received my cheque on July 2nd, 2009. What's more, I did not pay a single paisa as a bribe!!!

Your half an hour daily-15 hours a month for RTI will make huge difference in the way we are governed and treated by govt offices. In democracy numbers matter. Dear Aparna Karmarkar,

Congratulations. May all your future RTI endeavors be as successful.

A practicing architect would be a useful addition to this forum, which gets many queries related to land/property/municipal permissions/building bye-laws. I hope you will be able to find time occasionally to answer those of them which fall within your expertise.

Now that you've gotten the refund, are you still pursuing the RTI application, or have you "withdrawn" it? I would request that you continue pursuing it on the general principle that "Rights wither away and die unless continuously asserted and exercised". It will also make clear to the PIO /Ward officer who not to mess with in coming years. Members of this forum will be happy to assist you in drafting appeals, etc.

Wow, great move. I guess RTI is the way to go.

Congrats Aparna and please do spread the word, as I am sure there are so many out there who are still paying bribe to get things done and thus encouraging the corruptness to stayput.
Lets join hands to claim our right and reach out to people who need the correct guidance in this aspect.

Dear Aparna,

I have to get refund for Rs.98,000/- and I am waiting for a year.
