A SEMINAR on ‘The Role of Media and Right to Information Act’ was organised by the department of journalism and mass communication of the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth (MGKV), Varanasi on Saturday(06.01.2007)

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Raghavachari of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), said that the Right to Information Act (RTI) was a powerful instrument for empowering the citizens of India. Prof S Raghavachari further said media should raise awareness about the RTI among the common people.

He said Act would help media in getting information from any sector. He further said, “It is a prime duty of media to ensure effective implementation of this Act in the interest of common people.”

Presiding over the function, the Vice-Chancellor of the MGKV Prof SS Kushwaha said, “Media is a watchdog of the society and its alertness is marvelous. As a leader of the society, media should keep the people aware of the provisions of RTI. Media is the fourth pillar of democracy and people should always boost the morale of it.”

Prof Kushwaha said media should motivate the block development officers and village chiefs to keep villagers aware of the benefits of RTI. Head of the department of journalism department and president of the Teachers Association Dr AK Upadhyaya said any institution through the provisions of RTI was answerable to each and every citizen of the country. Media from the very beginning has fought for the existence of this Act in the interest of common people. Dr Vinod Singh and Dr Durgesh Tripathi also focused on the benefits of RTI.
