Default 27 of the 29 marriage palaces in periphery area unauthorised

Chandigarh, March 17 Of the 29 resorts and marriage palaces in the periphery area, 27 are unauthorised Out of these 29, 23 fall in Periphery Area and six on the Lalru side, but only two have been granted approval by the Punjab Government Out of the 23 resorts functioning in the Periphery Area, 22 resorts have not deposited any amount and are functioning unauthorised

Till date no action has been taken against the concerned Resorts/Marriage Palaces for not depositing the amount

This is how the reply of Greater Mohali Area Development Authority reads. A copy of the information supplied by GMADA under the Right to Information Act was placed on record in the Punjab and Haryana High Court today. The only two resorts which have been granted approval by the Punjab Government are Chimney Heights Resort, Mohali, and Vaseela Resort, Village Nadiali. While former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) S S Virk is a sleeping partner in Chimney Heights Resort, Vaseela is owned by another former DGP, M P S Aulakh.

While Chimney Heights Resort has deposited full licence fee and conversion charges, for Vaseela, neither the plans of the site have been sanctioned nor the requisite amount has been deposited, reads GMADA’s RTI reply.

On November 15 last year, GMADA had passed an order to cancel change of land use granted to Chimney Heights. The order was challenged by Virk’s brother in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has ordered a stay on it.

A copy of the RTI application gives details of all 29 marriage palaces and resorts under the jusrisdiction of GMADA running in the Periphery Area

I-T dept marks inquiry against illegal marriage palaces

Chandigarh, May 1 Taking cognisance of a news item which appeared in the Chandigarh Newsline (March 18), which stated that 27 of the 29 marriage palaces in the citys periphery were unauthorised, the Income-Tax department has initiated an inquiry.

Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (North-West Region) P K Chopra has issued directions to all field officers of the I-T department to visit the 27 marriage palaces and confirm whether they are filing income-tax returns or not.

Speaking to Newsline, Chopra said: After I read the news item, I immediately marked an inquiry and issued the directions to all field officers. Even if these unauthorised marriage palaces are found to be paying income-tax returns, their source of income has to be ascertained. These marriage palaces have to be brought into the tax net. We are not going to spare anyone who is evading tax.

On March 18, Newsline had carried the names of all the 27 unauthorised marriage palaces from a list provided by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), SAS Nagar, under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The reply stated that out of the 29 resorts/marriage palaces, 23 fall under the Periphery Area while six are in Lalru.

Only two Chimney Heights Resort in Mohali and Vaseela Resort in Nadiali village had been granted approval by the Punjab government.

While former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) S S Virk is a sleeping partner in the Chimney Heights Resort, Vaseela is owned by M P S Aulakh, also former Punjab DGP and brother of the present DGP N P S Aulakh.

Interestingly, while the Chimney Heights Resort authorities have paid the full licence fee and conversion charges, in the case of the Vaseela Resort, the government has made the change of land use but neither the plans of this site has been got sanctioned nor the requisite amount has been deposited, reads the RTI reply by GMADA.
