    RECOVERED Rs.5000/-FROM BANK THOUGH RTI

A leading public sector bank had recovered Rs.10000/- from account of my friend’s son towards various service charges while closing the account in Nov 2009. The bank did not respond to normal channels of redressal of complaint. At my guidance, RTI application was filed on 07-12-2009 followed by first appeal for no reply on 07-02-2010. On 05-03-2010 bank contacted him and requested him to collect refund of Rs.5000/- and withdraw RTI application and first appeal.

    RTI does work.

But after obtaining the said refund of Rs 5000; your friend must not sit at home.
He then must file a complaint in CIC so that rest 112 crore Indian public can not looted by the bank in future.
Everybody do not know; & may not file RTI.
So we must care interests of all.

I congratulate you for your success and adding another issue of the arbitrary rules of different banks regarding dormant / inoperative accounts being treated as new accounts and ask the existing account holders/customers to fill forms of new accounts. Is such practice as per rules ? No bank clarifies or provides procedure for activating inoperative accounts in reality. please suggest

Account holder has not to do any thing to operate his dormant/inoperative accounts. RBI says that bank should be cautious in allowing withdrawals from such accounts, by ensuring that such withdrawals are authorised by senior officer of the branch. This extra care is taken, since large number of frauds were being reported in dormant/inoperative accounts.
