CIC pulls up DVC for its failure to rehabilitate land oustees As Reported in OUTLook India, NEW DELHI, JULY 8 (PTI) The Central Information Commission has pulled up the Damodar Valley Corporation for its failure to rehabilitate oustees, saying that the company has failed in fulfilling its "corporate social responsibility" and marginalised the displaced persons. "The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) may have made significant contribution to the process of development, it has also contributed to the marginalisation of displaced persons who have sacrificed their lands for the project," Information Commissioner M M Ansari said. The Commission said that there was evidence that the DVC had failed in so far as "corporate social responsibility" was concerned. "The DVC has not adhered to the principle of equity and justice in pursuing its objectives of providing critical services, namely power," Ansari said. "In a democratic society, the emergence of better-off section of society cannot be justified at the cost of some people who are marginalised or pushed to a worse-off economic conditions," he said. The Commission's observations came on an RTI appeal of a land oustee Mohd Rafique Ansari, a resident of Jamtara district in Jharkhand, alleging denial of information pertaining to his rehabilitation. He said that he was denied compensation for his 20 acres land acquired in the project besides the employment as he refused to grease the palms of the officers concerned. Taking note of the serious allegations of RTI appellant, the Commission directed the DVC Chairman to investigate the matter relating to rehabilitate the displaced persons in Jharkhand and file a report by August 11. outlookindia.com | wired |
