DSGMC asked to appoint PIO under RTI Act by CIC

Reported in " The Economic Times"

NEW DELHI : The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee is bound to disclose information under the RTI Act as it is a public authority established by Parliament, the CIC has held while directing it to set up the necessary infrastructure for the purpose.

"The Committee is directed to ensure that the necessary infrastructure mandated under the RTI Act is established and made operational within one month," said Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah.

The Commission said that the Committee, established by Parliament, is a public authority and it was required to appoint a Public Information Officer to deal with RTI applications.

The Commission's order came on a petition filed by Lt Col Avtar Singh Berar (retd) who pointed out that the Committee did not have an Information Officer.

Berar had moved an application before the President of the DSGMC seeking the name and address of Public Information Officer and the Appellate Authority.

The Committee, however, failed to respond to his application after which the retired Army officer approached CIC.
