The Prime Minister in his reply to the discussion on Trust Motion Has refered that the RTI Act will be strengthened. But experiences creates anxiety on this. The question is , the central Cabinet have once decided to make amendments to the Act, excluding notings and some other similiar backsteps. It was withdrawn due to the pressure mounted on them due to the agitations of the activists which was supported by the left parties. Now similiar situation may come up. The protectors of RTI Act has to vigourously move to protect the Act by not allowing any reactionery changes. Also we shold ask Central Government to take steps for stronger implementation of the Act in various states. Some provisions empowering information commissions to take action against those on erring PIOS who have not remited Penalty Sum has to be made in the Act.

I concur with U. However it is duty of educated and civil society groups to keep a watch on moves of vested interest and to build pressure to make RTI more effective. In democracy, now only numbers count. Hence more and more law abiding citizens should unite and exert pressure. I quote:

Welcome to this forum Mr.Nambudiri. The Act has fully empowered the Commission to award penalties to the PIOs. The problem is absence of an authority to superintendent the Commissions. Please go through various postings in this forum.
