BMC health panel barely met in two years
While cases of diarrhoea, malaria and hypertension are rising at an alarming rate in the city, a Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that the civic body’s public health committee has hardly met in two years.
The committee, formed under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has met only 28 times in the last two years. As few as 16 meetings were held between March 2008 and March 2009. The number plunged further to just 12 between March 2009 and the same month this year.
A senior BMC official divulged the lack of enthusiasm displayed by the committee. “The committee’s meetings hardly ever register complete attendance,” he said. “A spirit of initiative and motivation is lacking in the members.”
The RTI query filed by the Praja Foundation showed that the attendance of the committee’s 36 members was low. Information procured revealed that 12 municipal councillors attended less than eight meetings.
The query also revealed that only 30 issues were raised in the course of the meetings. Most of the questions posed by the members concentrated on staff behaviour in hospitals and infrastructural glitches.
However, the members rubbished the claims. Geeta Yadav, a corporator and a member of the committee, said, “Our efficiency cannot be doubted. Although we work relentlessly, the proposals put forth by us aren’t implemented.”
