RTI for Income tax refund - Do I need RTI ?

I had received a cheque from IT deptt for my IT refund. However the cheque was returned by the bank because I did not put revenue stamp which was required so the cheque bounced. Now I need to get a fresh cheque from IT deptt. How do I go about it ? Do I need an RTI? Who should I wrIte ? The cheque came from IT Hyderabad.

No, you do not need to use RTI at this stage. Just send back the cheque to the office who send it to you, requesting them to reissue it by changing date. Send it by a registered post/ speed post and preserve the acknowledgement carefully. If you do not receive the re-issued cheque within a reasonable time, you may have to resort to RTI

Thanks Atul, can you tell me how to file the RTI (format , whom to address, what supporting docs needed ?).I am in US and my parents sent the check to Income tax deptt in hyderabad but they returned it mentioning that it needs to be sent to assessing officer , probably my parents sent it to some other office. So looks like RTI is only option. Please help.

Sending it to the Assessing officer is the correct procedure.

The Assessing officer is the same as the ITO/AC of your Ward/Circle where you filed the return asking for refund and which actually issued the refund.
(It must have come with a covering letter or a assessment order)
