Bangalore: Now on, the questions will come with more bite. Shaped and sharpened, right in the school classroom. Furthering the efforts to ensure greater awareness about the Right To Information , the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) is set to incorporate RTI in the state’s school syllabus.

The plan is to include RTI as chapters in textbooks of classes 6 and 9.
The move assumes importance considering that the RTI Act, 2005 recommends educational programmes by governments to enhance awareness and use of RTI . According to Section 26 of the Act, the appropriate government may “develop and organize educational programmes to advance the understanding of the public, in particular of disadvantaged communities as to how to exercise the rights contemplated under this Act.’’

M N Baig, director, DSERT, told TOI the addition could be made in the 2009-10 academic year. “We are rewriting the syllabus and tendering process for textbooks this year has commenced. RTI will be incorporated into textbooks but not this year,’’ he said.

KIC welcomes move: The Karnataka Information Commission said the move was in tune with the government’s entrusted responsibility to create awareness on RTI . A KIC official said the commission had written to the state education department about a year ago to initiate measures to bring RTI within the school education ambit. “A few other states have been proactively following up on the recommendations on their own as well,’’ he said. Maharashtra was the first state to include RTI in school textbooks.

C N Kumar, an RTI activist, has, for the past year, been seeking details of programmes taken up by the government to incorporate RTI in school textbooks. “The effect will be on different levels. Once RTI is in textbooks, children will start looking at the right to know as a fundamental right, like the right to vote,’’ Kumar said.
