Dear learned members . I asked one CPIO to give me information about exact amount spent on certain things. I got reply that since expenditure was made through different sectins of the office hence one exact figure is not compiled and hence exact expenditure can not be given . My question now is , can I ask for approximate amount spent ? plz reply early so that i can decide wether to go for appeal or file a fresh application.

Instead of asking for "approximate expenditure" ask for the "amount spent as per records maintained with the accounts section of the public authority". The accounts department can never say that they do not have that information ! |

It is very important how you frame ur question. the PIO is liable only to information, which public authority is holding. It is very important to know in which form the information is available with PA. I think in your case the amount are spend on different heads(section). Why dont you ask that 1) how many section you'll have 2) what are the amount send on different section. Once the information is available you can compile it. |

I would actually tend to agree with Kariraji here. Had i been in your boots, I would have termed it as a case of being provided with wrong information. Here I would prefer a first appeal instead of having to file a new RTI. Go for the First Appeal, as the sought information is actually readily available with the PA because he does know how much of money was given to different sections and for what purpose. Thus an intelligent CPIO (ASSUMPTION: not wanting to hold back info) would have provided you with copies of the account books showing the amount of money that was transferred and on what grounds. File first appeal! |

But also note, you can also file a complain with the CIC U/s 18 as well. It all depends on how important is the information to you? If the information is very urgently required, it would be better to go in for a fresh application with a carefully worded request, which should be to the point. Manoj |
