Swamy seeks Barnala nod to prosecute Karunanidhi
As reported at indianexpress.com on Feb 08 2011
Chennai : Janta Party president Subramanian Swamy continued his attack against the DMK leadership — this time seeking sanction to prosecute Chief Minister and party patriarch M Karunanidhi for allegedly showing favouritism while allotting expensive housing plots. Swamy approached the office of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Monday with a request for permission to prosecute the CM under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The allegation in question is related to allotting housing plots owned by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board under Chief Minister’s discretionary quota, which an RTI query revealed to favour those close to the power centres, including officials, judiciary and politicians. After the list of beneficiaries became public following the RTI reply, the state government scrapped the quota as announced by the Governor’s address to the Assembly last month.
“Karunanidhi as Chief Minister, using his so-called ‘discretionary power’... allotted prime lands and plots to a favoured few, their family members, personal staff, friends, servants, and pliant police officials and others at far less than the market value of the land,” alleged Swamy in his petition to the Governor, charging that the CM has “misused and abused his office” and thus, committed offence under Sections 11 and 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Swamy cited 11 cases where officials or their kin reportedly benefited from this discretion, a list that includes head of the state intelligence wing, Karunanidhi’s personal security officers, the IT manager at DMK headquarters and her sister, and “even the clerk of a former Chief Justice of India”.
He also mentioned the allotments given to former BJP MP L Ganesan who is seen to be close to the DMK leadership, kin of state minister Veerapandi S Arumugam, Congress MLA D Yasodha, DMK MLA P Moorthy who is considered to be close to Karunanidhi’s son, M K Alagiri. There’s no transparency as to why these persons were selected in the allotment of lands and flats, added Swamy.
Swamy, whose litigation on 2G spectrum sale brought additional pressure on the government and the political parties to take damage-control measure, claimed that he had 23 dossiers against the DMK patriarch.

Re: Swamy seeks Barnala nod to prosecute Karunanidhi
The participants should still be prosecuted for their earlier actions and inactions. But the powerful people feeling that they may not get away with such irregularity is itself a victory, and may discourage people from further misdeeds.
