though i'm not very sure about it, but you can file a rti in the office of DM and ask him to furnish the details of land use of that particular land piece and also ask him to confirm the ownership of that land (as to who is the owner of that land piece)

I bought a flat on G.B Road in Sai baba complex, I got in touch with the registrar office who did a check on the plot numbers. It did not fall in Forest land. I have now paid stamp duty and registered the flat. so its safe.
I suggest you get in touch with them.
I am not sure on Govt stand, I am a N.R.I and dont know much about the system here

forest land issue- ways to find out the truth and solution to it
I have invested in a flat in the manpada region in thane. It is still under construction and we were promised possession by June 2011. One fine day when we went to look at the progress of the construction, we see a board of "Sanjay Gandhi National Park" saying "This is forest land and no trespassing allowed". When we spoke to the builder about this, he is unavailable for comment and his assistant is giving us unsatisfactory replies like "Wo board ko uthake fek denge".
Now my query is,
Where can I find what the fact is? Whether this flat is actually under forest land and will we get an OC for this flat.
Also, I would like to know if this happens to be forest land and we wont be getting an OC for this, Is there any rule that protects innocent civilians like us who invest their money in expensive flats hoping to have a good house and are cheated by builders like this? Is there any way I can get justice for this?? How can i help a situation like this?
