Fire at Janata Bhavan destroys 4,000 files

GUWAHATI: A major fire broke out at Janata Bhavan-the old Secretariat Building here — on Wednesday night gutted the office of the State Information Commission and about 4,000 files and documents relating to the Right to Information Act besides damaging chambers of three Ministers.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. and spread quickly to six chambers in one corner.

Seven fire-tenders were rushed to douse the fire which the administration suspected might have been caused by electrical short circuit.

Magisterial probe ordered

The Assam government has ordered a magisterial probe into the circumstances leading to the fire.

Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Nazarul Islam, parliamentary secretaries Dildar Rezza, Bidya Singh Engleng, who have their chambers in Janata Bhavan, rushed to the spot.

The view of the Janata Bhawan premises in Guwahati on September 11 after it was completely gutted down by the devastating fire suspected to be arising from a Short Circuit at 6:30PM on yesterday evening. Guwahati, September 11 (ANI): A devastating fire that broke out in Dispur has reduced to ashes a part of the Janata Bhawan on Wednesday evening. According to information, the fire broke out at around 6 p.m. in the evening from a room and it later spread to other rooms. Fifty fire tenders were needed to douse the flames out.

According to the RTI Commissioner, Dr. B K Gohain, the Right to Information cell has been completely ravaged and not a single file has been spared. Sources said that the chambers of Nurjamal Sarkar, Assam Law Minister Pranab Gogoi and Parliament Secretaries Sarat Saikia and Bidya Singh Inglng were also reduced to ashes. The authorities are yet to ascertain the reasons behind the fire.
