    Dear Vinod Sampat,

    Welcome to this portal.

    Co-operative Societies are covered under the RTI Act irrespective of whether financial loans are taken by the society.

    1) Co-op Sty are not covered under sec 2(a) of the Act:

    Sec 2(a) "appropriate Government" means in relation to a public authority which is established, constituted, owned, controlled or substantially financed by funds provided directly or indirectly—
    (i) by the Central Government or the Union territory administration, the Central Government;
    (ii) by the State Government, the State Government;

    But Co-op. Sty are covered under section 2(f) of the Act:

    Sec. 2(f) "information" means any material in any form, including records, documents, memos, e-mails, opinions, advices, press releases, circulars, orders, logbooks, contracts, reports, papers, samples, models, data material held in any electronic form and information relating to any private body which can be accessed by a public authority under any other law for the time being in force;

    Hence the Co-op. Sty's are covered under the RTI Act through the Public Authority i.e. Deputy Registrar of Co-op. Sty's

    Please file your RTI applications to the Deputy Registrar, who in turn will forward your application/ queries to the concerned society and get the information for you.

    Hope this helps.

    I would like to know if information from housing federation can be obtained under the right of information act. Severe allegations have been made against the housing federation and they are concealing information.

    Re: co-operative housing society

    Yep jps50 is right.

    It seems the Mumbai District Co-operative Housing Federation Limited is incidentally registered with the same Public Authority i.e. Registrar Co-op Sty's.

    I would appreciate if you file a RTI application on housing federation through the deputy registrar relevant ward.

    Do share your experience with the members of our forum.
