Bullish about future, NGOs observe RTI Day
Express news service, Sep 29, 2007

Kolkata, September 28 Various non-governmental organisations got
together to observe the RTI Day by spread awareness about Right To
Information Act among the people. Setting up kiosks in the city, they
explained the details of the Right To Information Act 2005.

"The RTI is an effective tool for the common man, who is otherwise
kept in dark about several important issues. It is high time that we
start using the RTI," said Pranabesh Dutta of The Calcutta Samaritans.
RTI formats too, were distributed among the people. The
representatives of the organisations said they had received
enthusiastic response. "Several court fee stamps were bought by
people," he added.

The operations of RTI cells across the city are anything but
satisfactory. Most organisations fail to the meet the 30-day deadline
for coming up with the answers and get away with impunity. A case in
point is the RTI cell at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which gets
around 1,000 applications a month. But the Calcutta Samaritans are
enthusiastic about the future. This is the third awareness campaign
they conducted in the city.
