Appointment of ICs prerogative of EC: Sufi
Srinagar, Sep 8: The State Chief Information Commissioner has strongly contested a news item carried in a section of press quoting “unknown sources” regarding the Commission’s reservations for appointment of any particular person as Commissioner.
The Chief Information Commissioner G. R. Sufi said that such news item is fabricated and denied that he has made such statement. Sufi made it clear that it is a prerogative of the Empowered Committee constituted under Sub Section (3) of Section 12 of the State RTI Act, 2009 to recommend the appointment of commissioners.
He, however, confirmed that to uphold the conventions and practices developed with regard to appointment of two commissioners, the Chief Minister and other members of the Empowered Committee were conscious to interact with him regarding the implementation of this section and he has been requesting for early appointment of commissioners.
The State Chief Information Commissioner has further asked the news agencies and individual newspapers not to publish any news in future unless it is expressly confirmed by the Commission. “I expect that to maintain the highest traditions and impartiality of the Commission, the press would uphold the dignity of the Commission.” the CIC added.
