Default FSL employee waits till retirement to ensure justice for colleague’s family

FSL employee waits till retirement to ensure justice for colleague’s family
as reported Express News Service, Nov 02, 2008 Indian Express

Ahmedabad, November 1 : He waited till retirement, and once out of the clutches of duty, Kanti Macwan, a laboratory assistant with the Forensic Science Laboratory at Gandhinagar, took up the cause of his colleague, who had died long ago.

Only recently, after a long and hard struggle, his effort paid off and the family of the late laboratory assistant, Bhalji Rana, received the amount due to them from the welfare fund.

“Long ago, they had a family welfare trust at the FSL and the entire staff used to contribute to it to pay for the families of those who had died on duty,” said Macwan, adding that in 1998, Rana had died and the entire staff had contributed to the welfare fund.

“However, the money was never paid to the family and even when the union asked for the same, they did not get any reply,” he said.

He added that when the family approached the authorities, they were told that no money had been deposited in the fund. “The trust too ceased to operate after that,” Macwan said.

Macwan, who retired in 2007, took up the issue under the RTI. He said he sought all the details pertaining to the trust to which they replied that there was no such trust operating and that there was no money. Dissatisfied with the same, Macwan then made an appeal to the higher authorities.

“My intention was to see that Rana’s family got the money, as their financial condition was not too good. While they first tried to ward me off, subsequently, they paid the family Rs 84,000 in my presence only a few days ago,” Macwan told Newsline.

KM Mehta, Administrative Officer, FSL, said that the trust body was changed in between and the modalities took a lot of time, which resulted in the delay of payment.

“But we have released the amount after sorting the issue out at our end,” Mehta said, adding that the trust is functional once again.
