Lightbulb Unanswered: Need some details on filing RTI

Have a few questions regarding filing an RTI request:
1. Should the office/designation to whom the query is directed mentioned?
2. What if this is not known to the requesting person?
3. Can the query be directed towards central govt? Any central govt body?
4. Can multiple questions be asked/requested in an RTI?
5. What if multiple questions pertains to multiple govt bodies but in the same context? Will this routing and summarizing be done?
6. Can this information made available as part of an RTI request be shared with others or used in a court of law?
7. Is the information provided under oath (i mean is it vowed to be true or correct as per knowledge available)?

1. Just address the RTI application to the CPIO (or SPIO or only PIO) of the Public Authority (PA) at the postal address available. Avoid addressing by personal name because Government Officers do get transferred at regular intervals. Do a search on the web for the PIO of the PA or have a look at the notice board of the PA. If you cannot locate it, just do as mentioned above.
2. Your RTI application needs to be as per the RTI Rules and must be accompanied by a application fee. These are different for the Centre, States and UT's, High Courts, etc. Please visit the Guide section of the forum (
RTI Guide) and you will find many useful articles which will answer all your questions/clarify all doubts.
3. There is no limit to asking the amount of information in one application. However, it is recommended to be brief and to the point. One major exception is Karnataka which has restricted each application to only one subject matter and to only 150 words.
4. If the information you seek pertains to another PA, then the recipient PIO is supposed to transfer that part of the application to the correct PIO within 5 days of receiving the RTI application, under written intimation to you.
5. The RTI Act has been legislated to bring in "transarency" and therefore the complete RTI process has to be transparent. Information obtained under RTI can be considered to be in the Public Domain. It can be shared with anyone and even produced in the Court. It will be of help if you ask for "certified" copies of documents in your application, which are allowed to be given under the RTI Act.
6. The information provided under RTI Act has to be correct, complete and not misleading. If it is not so, you have the option of going for "First Appeal" and then also a "Second Appeal".
