Continuing pressure on the Transport Department over alleged irregularities, right to information (RTI) activist Sudip Tamhankar on Wednesday exposed another scam wherein the Transport Department was sitting cool over the failure of a transport contractor of bauxite to pay transport cess amounting to Rs.1.66 crore for five years.
Releasing copies of documents obtained under the RTI, Mr. Tamhankar on Wednesday disclosed that Margao-based M\S. P. S. Gosalia had not paid cess for five years. The department had said recovery proceedings had been initiated. Referring to the case, Mr. Tamhankar, general secretary of the All Goa Private Bus Owners’ Association, said if a bus owner defaulted in paying his dues on time, the department slapped 25 per cent penalty and recovered the dues. “How can the same department allow crores of rupees of cess outstanding for five years?,” he said.
