Legal definition of "Information" in the context of the Right to Information Act, is incorporated in section 2(f) of the said act, which reads as under :

RTI Act empowers the citizens to get all necessary information to keep a check on functioning of public authorities. However, often provided information is not relevant or useful to the applicant. There are many reasons for not getting correct and proper information. CPIO/PIOs are required to provide justification as to how the examptions claimed by them are applicatible. Thereofre merely quoting the provisions and refusing the information would be wilful denial of the information.
