Two recent orders passed by the Central Information Commission (CIC), an appellate body constituted under the Right to Information Act 2005, imposing a cost of Rs. 25,000 on a public information officer and distinguishing between classified and non-classified documents have come as a shot in the arm for RTI activists.

Sampath, an activist based here, points out that disposing of an appeal filed by Satyendra Kumar Singh, a resident of Bihar, on February 28, the CIC presided over by Chief Information Commissioner Satyananda Mishra had imposed the maximum cost of Rs. 25,000 on a Central Public Information Officer (CPIO)
