The Gujarat government has taken on the Election Commission over the transfer of top officials in the run up to the assembly polls.
The Election Commission had ordered the transfer of eight senior officers, including the DGP, and asked the government to give names of replacements.
However, the government has questioned the authority of the Election Commission, and written a letter demanding to know the reasons for the transfer.
In response, the Election Commission said it was constitutionally empowered to do so and directed the government to comply with its order by Wednesday.
The BJP, meanwhile, has filed a Right to Information petition demanding to know why the police chief should be shifted out ahead of the state elections.
