Thread: Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award

  1. Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award

The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) is launching two major initiatives on Sunday to commemorate first death anniversary of Manjunath. The first initiative is "Right To Information (RTI) Act National Helpline" aimed to empower people to fight against corruption. The second one is "The Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award" is meant to honour and encourage persons and institutions working to uphold truth and honesty in Indian corporate, government or public life.
"The RTI Act helpline would not only help improve governance in Indian public life, but would be a great way to carry forward Manjunath's legacy," she said. The Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award carries a citation and a cash prize of one lakh. "We will start accepting nominations from Sunday itself. Details are available at Manjunath Shanmugam Trust," she added.

The launch will take place at Gurgaon, Haryana, on Sunday, in the presence of IIM alumni from India and abroad. Narayana Murthy, chief mentor, Infosys, and super cop Kiran Bedi Kiran Bedi will make the inaugural helpline calls. Started in association with Magsaysay Award winner Arvind Kejriwal, helpline will disseminate information about the RTI Act among people. Serviced by a professionally trained call centre team, the helpline will initially operate in English, Hindi and one major South Indian language.

The efforts made by the MST and IIM alumni have blessings of Manjunath's parents. "I don't want lip service for my son. The real tribute will be to wipe out corruption from the face of India," said Manjunath's father Raghvendra Shanmugam, while talking to the TOI on telephone from his residence in Kolar, Bangalore. "We have died everyday after the death of our son," said mother Pramila. However, both mother and father are also proud that their son is today a role model for young generation.

The family want death penalty for killers. "Initially, we were disturbed by the slow trial at a Lakhimpur Kheri court. I wrote to UP chief minister and governor several times requesting them to expedite the case, but nothing happened" said Raghvendra. "But now judge has directed to have hearing at every 15 days. We expect judgment in next three months," he said. He also had a word of caution for youngsters. "Fight corruption but remember that you also have responsibilities towards your family," he said.

Faculty and students of IIM-Lucknow have not forgotten their brave alumnus. But due to Common Admission Test (CAT) scheduled on Sunday, a formal programme to pay tribute to Manjunath will be held on November 30. Nevertheless, students will light candles on Sunday evening on the campus to remember their hero.
