    Nothing right about it

After many hassles due to a lack of manpower, the Howrah Municipal Corporation has finally opened the Right to Information cell.

The problem it now faces is the lack of knowledge about the civic body’s RTI cell as well as the RTI Act as most of the applications received are not in adherence to the Act's proceedings, forcing the cell to dispose of them.

The cell, which is under three heads ~ state public information officer (SPIO), assistant state public information officer (ASPIO) and appellate officer (AO) ~ has received 17 information-seeking applications since the RTI cell began functioning in August.

The SPIO for HMC, Mr Manas Das, who also holds the post of secretary for HMC, said: “We have received 17 applications, many of which seek information about building plans, mutation or some legal proceedings. We have also received jumbled up applications or those which do not fall under our jurisdiction so we had to dispose of them.” He said since the cell has only recently formed, not many people are aware of it.
