The state government will spend around Rs 500 crore for the renovation of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal in Gomti Nagar. Significantly, the dismantling exercise of existing structures of the Ambedkar Udyan for transforming it into the Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal will cost around Rs 60 crore.

These facts were revealed during the hearing of a petition filed by former DSP and head of Congress RTI cell, Shailendra Singh at the State Information Commission. Singh had approached the State Information Commission last August to seek information about the Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal.

“The documents furnished by developmental agencies like Rajkiya Nirman Nigam, Lucknow Development Authority clearly states that how the Rs 87-crore project escalated to Rs 500 crore. Around Rs 60 crore will be spent on dismantling the existing structures there,” said Singh.
In 1997, Mayawati, who was the chief minister then, had built the Ambdekar Udyan with a budget of Rs 83 crore. Later in 2007, Mayawati decided to transformed it to Ambedkar Samajik Parivarthan Sthal.

As per the records of the developmental agencies, a huge amount has been earmarked for different types of stones that will be used in the upcoming site. “Providing and fixing Makrana white marble flooring from blocks will cost over Rs 5 crore. White/pink wall cladding will cost over Rs 37 crore. Granite block flooring will cost over Rs 13 crore,” the documents state.

Meanwhile, taking cognisance of absence of a suitable answer from the office of principal secretary to the CM, the information commission ordered them to give an explanation within the next 10 days. The next hearing for the case has been scheduled for January 9.
