The Indian middle class, which had been quite used to being pushed around, finally woke up and asserted itself. With support from media the middle class, which earlier was quite happy with its comforts and generally averse to protest, spilled on the streets with candle-lit protests. This resulted in the conviction of Manu Sharma and company in the Jessica Lall case and brought to justice the killers of Pryadarshini Mattoo
Not only this, the middle class asserted its rights by fighting for it. The campaign for the Right to Information Act rattled the government. It proved that Indians were willing to fight for justice at every forum. The RTI Act was a watershed in India because it brought to accountability the bureaucracy of India which in the past has created an opaque wall behind which it indulged in its corrupt and inefficient ways.
