CIC penalises over 120 info officers

New Delhi, April 12: The Central Information Commission (CIC), has penalised over 120 public information officers (PIOs), for not providing information under the Right to Information Act of 2005. They have paid penalty totalling Rs 13 lakhs until March 2008.

Disclosing this at a seminar organised on the Right to Information Act 2005, in New Delhi on Saturday, chief information commissioner, Wajahat Habibullah also stated that over Rs 5 lakhs have already been recovered from the guilty public information officers out of the total of Rs 13 lakhs.

He clarified that the full penalty would not be recovered as more than 100 PIOs, accused of not providing information under the Act, have moved various courts.
