Got selected, but job denied

T'PURAM: What happens when a Congress supporter gets selected for a job in a university governed by a pro-CPM Syndicate? If you donít know the answer, ask R Johnson of Soma Vilas of Vellimon in Kollam district.

The Syndicate meeting on February 27, 2007 had approved Johnsonís appointment as lecturer in the Psychology Department at Kariavattom under the Latin Catholic (LC) quota. Incidentally, Johnson was the lone applicant under the LC quota to attend the interview for the post.

There were three vacancies in the Psychology Department, one in general category, one reserved for Muslim community and one under LC quota. Though appointments were made under the first two categories, the appointment of Johnson was delayed due to the lackadaisical attitude of the University.

Meanwhile, the Syndicate meeting on March 19 decided, without assigning any reason, to refer the appointment of Johnson to Governor RL Bhatia, who is also the Chancellor of the University.

Johnson had petitioned the Governor and the Education Minister against the delay in the appointments. He alleged in the petition to the Governor that his appointment had been unnecessarily delayed for the last one year under the instigation of some vested interests so that a fresh applicant can be inducted by them.

The University had earlier set aside Johnsonís appointment on the grounds that the University was yet to get confirmation of the genuineness of the community claim of Johnson.

The Revenue Authorities and KIRTADS were requested to clarify Johnsonís community status. In response, the Kollam District Collector had informed that Johnson indeed belonged to the Latin Catholic community.
As per the details of the appointment process, obtained by Johnson through the Right to Information Act, he had secured 58.3 percent marks in the process.

Though the details of those ranked first and second in the merit list and under the Muslim community quota were given, there was no mention of the LC quota.
