As reported by IANS in expressbuzz.com on 13 January 2010:RTI activist Satish Shetty killed near Pune

RTI activist Satish Shetty killed near Pune

PUNE: Leading Right to Information (RTI) activist Satish Shetty - who exposed many land scams in Maharashtra - was killed by unidentified men while on a morning walk at Talegaon on the outskirts of this city Wednesday.

"Around 7.15 a.m., when Shetty was on his morning walk, some unidentified people assaulted him and injured him seriously. He was rushed to a private hospital, but succumbed later," Pradeep Aphale, investigating officer of Talegaon Police Station, told IANS.

According to a colleague, 38-year-old Shetty left home around 6.45 a.m. for his usual morning walk when some people attacked him with swords near Bhandari Hospital.

Shetty, a systematic whistleblower, was credited with throwing light on several major land scams in the picturesque Talegaon-Lonavala regions, now a favourite with realtors in the state.

He shot to fame after exposing certain corrupt land deals in and around the country's first expressway, the Mumbai-Pune expressway, over a decade ago.

Condemning the incident, leading Mumbai crusader Sumaira Abdulali said this comes barely a week after the attack on another prominent Mumbai social activist Nayana Kathpalia and threats to Neera Punj of Citispace.

"This has become a trend and social activists are considered soft targets, the government must take immediate steps to stop such attacks," Abdulali, convenor of Movement against Intimidation, Threats and Revenge against Activists (MITRA), told IANS.

MITRA has sent letters to Home Minister R.R. Patil listing the attacks suffered by activists in the past few years.

Abdulali was threatened and assaulted in May 2004, H.S. D'Lima of Citispace threatened and assaulted in March 2005, James John of AGNI was threatened and assaulted in March 2006, activist Edwin Britto was threatened and attacked in 2000 and again in June 2005, Suryakant Panchal of BEAG was assaulted in June 2004, Anandini Thakoor and Aftab Siddiqui got threats in July 2005, January 2009 and mobbed thrice, Navin Pandya of AGNI was threatened and attacked in September 2009, S. Ganesan was threatened and attacked in November 2002, and Navleen Kumar was attacked in 2002.

Man who used RTI as weapon is hacked to death near Pune

Pune : Satish Shetty, who had been invoking the Right to Information Act to wage a lonely battle against the land mafia in the Maval area of Pune district, was hacked to death early this morning in Talegaon. Shetty, officials said, had brought to light a string of irregularities in Maval comprising the areas of Lonavla, Talegaon and Dehu Road. His family alleged those he had exposed were behind the murder.
DIG (Registration) Chintamani Joshi said a complaint by Shetty brought to light a fake registration racket in Maval. “A sub-registrar has been suspended after an investigation conducted by the Thane DIG. The investigation was launched after Shetty complained. It is still going on. Several tax evasion cases have been detected. Government land had been sold without permission of the competent authority,” he said.
Police said Shetty was on a morning walk around 7 am when he stopped near Madhumati Apartment to pick up newspapers. Three masked men attacked him with sharp weapons. Shetty tried to escape but the men chased him and inflicted several injuries on the head. Alerted by local residents, his younger brother Sandeep reached the spot and took Shetty to the Pavana Hospital where he was declared dead.
“My brother had exposed as many as 12 frauds using the RTI Act. Those he exposed killed my brother,” alleged Sandeep. “My brother lay in a pool of blood on the road for half-an-hour. But nobody came forward to take him to hospital.”
He said Satish had filed an application with the Talegaon Dabhade police recently, saying there was threat to his life.
DSP Shrikrishna Kokate said: “Protection was not given to Shetty immediately because there is a process of verification that has to be completed before providing police bandobast.”
RTI activists said they have sent a fax to the Maharashtra Home Minister for a CID probe into the killing

Horryfying incident ,Its the lackness on the part of police to provide protection to the social activists despite asking the protection. Who is responsible to this loss. Its the nexuses between the mafia+ politician+beaurocrats. Its high time that renowed activists should be provided the police protection as they are working against the vested interest of mafia .

    thank you
