AHMEDABAD: Nanduben Vasava's 12-year battle with the state revenue department ended on Tuesday. The department finally paid her the dues. Nanduben was fighting for her right to get the group insurance amount of Rs 53,000 sanctioned to which she was entitled at the time of her husband's death in 1995.
Nanduben's husband S P Vasava was a junior clerk with the revenue department in Bharuch.
A proactive decision taken by the Gujarat Information Commission (GIC) three months ago had made the revenue department accountable to Nanduben's grievance. Nanduben had filed a complaint under the Right to Information Act (RTI) with the GIC after the revenue department did not respond to her application demanding details of her group insurance entitlement.
The issue came up for hearing in February this year and GIC asked the revenue department to look into the matter. On May 10, the revenue department Surat sanctioned the group insurance amount entitled to Nanduben after her husband's death.
It was found that the Vasava was permitted unpaid leave for more than two years. During this period he did not pay the premium of the group insurance amount. Notices to deposit the same with interest were given to Vasava on February 12 this year. Nanduben paid this amount in March. The department then issued a directive to pay Nanduben the entire amount on behalf of her late husband under '8011 Beema and Pension' fund of the state government.
